UK sees highest COVID-19 figure since January

영국 하루 확진 2만6천명으로 급증…”매일 인원 발표 그만해야”

The UK on Wednesday reported over 26-thousand COVID-19 cases,… the country’s highest figure since January.
However, despite the spike in cases,… health officials are calling on the British authorities to stop publishing daily figures.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
The UK is continuing to report a rising number of COVID-19 cases,… confirming 26-thousand-68 new infections on Wednesday.
It marks Britain’s worst day for infections since the virus was surging in January.
Wednesday’s case count also marks a 61-percent spike on-week,… when over 16-thousand cases were recorded.
Despite cases surging across the UK,… Professor Robert Dingwall,… a member of the UK Government’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation,… recommended that Britain stop publishing daily figures on COVID-19 cases,… as the virus is a “long way from being an important cause” of death.
Dingwall also urged people to stop panicking about rising infection levels,… which he says may only be reflecting the “last wave of mild infections” among unvaccinated youths.
Public Health Scotland says nearly 2-thousand Scottish football fans attended at least one Euro 2020 match while infected with COVID-19.
One-thousand-991 COVID-19 cases in Scotland have been linked to Euro 2020 matches between June 11th and June 28th.
Nearly three-quarters were linked to fans aged 20 to 29.
Among them,… nearly 13-hundred travelled to London to watch Scotland’s match against England on June 18th.
With the Tokyo Summer Olympics kicking off this month,… the host city confirmed 714 new cases on Wednesday,… up nearly a hundred cases on week.
It’s the first time the Japanese capital has topped 700 new cases since May 26th.
The recent spike in Tokyo has prompted officials to hint that a state of emergency may have to be re-imposed in the near future.
