Facebook stated on Monday it will broaden a list of incorrect health claims it bans from the platform to consist of exposed claims about vaccines in general, such as that they are harmful or cause autism.
The social media business said in a post it was increasing the kinds of false claims about the coronavirus, its vaccine and other vaccines that it will eliminate, including that COVID-19 is a manufactured infection, and that vaccines are dangerous. Such claims are already restricted in advertisements on the platform.
Facebook stated it would remove groups, pages and accounts that repeatedly share the debunked claims.
The company has presented more rigid policies to combat COVID-19 vaccine misinformation throughout the pandemic, but has had a more hands-off approach to false information about other vaccines, which has actually rarely been removed and just when it was thought about to risk “impending damage”.
In December, Facebook announced it would get rid of incorrect claims about COVID-19 vaccines that had been debunked by public health specialists, though in current weeks news reports have determined Facebook pages, groups and Instagram accounts still spreading these incorrect claims.
Facebook also said it would help users learn where and when they can get the coronavirus vaccine.
It will partner with Johns Hopkins and the AARP to reach Black, Latinx, Native Americans and people over 50 with educational material that attends to concerns those groups may have about the brand-new vaccine.
