The Cuomo administration simply revealed that it began opening COVID-only nursing-homes last November.

What a great idea: New York has actually produced COVID-only assisted living home throughout the state to treat still-positive patients after they’re released from hospitals. If just Group Cuomo had actually moved to do it before countless seniors passed away after the state required houses to take in COVID-positive patients, prohibiting them even from testing for the virus.
State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker revealed Wednesday in a letter to legislators that the department began establishing COVID-only homes in November: “The homes were established to enable the transfer of MEDICALLY STABLE, BUT persistently positive COVID-19 retirement home eligible patients from Post 28 hospitals to these nursing homes to enhance their recovery prior to release to house or another assisted living home.” He gave no details beyond keeping in mind 19 such homes with a total of 1,941 beds.
Zucker’s admission that some patients are “constantly favorable” contradicts his department’s whitewashing July report that absolved itself of duty after the March 25 mandate caused fatal break outs at previously COVID-free retirement home. It pretended virus-positive patients sent out from health centers to nursing homes were no longer contagious therefore hadn’t triggered the break outs.
Why didn’t the state create COVID-only houses nearly a year back, as some other states did? Early in the pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services waived policies to make their development possible, allowing the short-lived use of structures as experienced nursing centers and lifting limits on transfers and discharges.
The state even denied the request of nursing-home operators to send their favorable clients to the health centers the feds set up at the Javits Center and on the USNS Convenience.
It may take months to learn the state’s excuse for waiting so long: Zucker’s letter reacted to questions legislators asked him back in August. He sat on the numbers showing the real toll of the infection on assisted living home (13,297 dead homeowners) till Chief law officer Tish James’ report called out the state’s enormous undercount.
A top Cuomo aide’s strange reason to state lawmakers for the stall: ” We froze” for fear the numbers would ” be utilized versus us” by federal district attorneys. Isn’t hiding proof itself a criminal offense?
Hmm.
