The Commission, which monitors to guarantee that federal governments do not unfairly assist business for competitive benefit, said in a statement the German plan was a “proportionate” action and in line with EU state aid guidelines.

The scheme entitles companies from all sectors to payment for damages sustained throughout lockdowns imposed in Germany to consist of the coronavirus pandemic in March-April and November-December last year.

The European Union’s antitrust chief, Margrethe Vestager, said the measures would complement German state aid plans, already authorized by the EU, providing assistance of approximately 4 million euros per business.
