COVID Spread More Inside by Talking Than Coughing, Study Suggests

Talking might spread COVID more than coughing, according to scientists who have actually developed an app to help calculate the risk of handing down the virus in various settings.

The team based in the U.K. also found social distancing at 2 meters (6.5 feet) in a badly aerated room was not likely to protect others from the virus.

The study contributes to existing research suggesting COVID can spread out in huge beads that result from coughs, as well as in smaller sized aerosol particles given off when we speak and breathe.

The group also considered how long COVID stays viable outside the body, how much infection an infected person carries, and the dose of virus an individual needs to get infected.

In addition, the research study recommended that speaking for one hour in an unventilated space would raise the threat of infection by 10 to 20 percent for others.

Highlighting the restrictions of the research study, Catherine Noakes, professor of environmental engineering for buildings at the University of Leeds, who did not work on the paper, stated the findings were based on assumptions.
