Mutations are basically modifications to an organism’s genetic product that can occur at any phase of life. They can take place for an entire host of factors like if DNA or RNA does a careless task at copying itself during cellular division, or if an organism is exposed to destructive ecological factors, such as smog or UV light.
Anomalies can affect any element of an organisms’ life: from its look to its behavior or they can have absolutely no effect at all. And while mutation rates are naturally greater in viruses than, say, people– mutations are in fact, definitely vital to the development of all life types.
In a paper released in early 2020, a group from the Los Alamos National Lab recommended that this anomaly was triggering SARS-CoV-2 to be more infectious by enabling the infection to enter cells more effectively. When it was initially reported in March, this anomaly was only discovered in a few of the hereditary sequences that were readily available to scientists at the time, and was primarily present in Europe. But by April, it was present in over half of the offered series and had actually broadened worldwide. Today, this anomaly is so widespread that it isn’t simply a variance from the pandemic– it is the pandemic.
