India’s capital is reeling from the double effect of the coronavirus and serious air pollution, New Delhi’s chief minister warned Thursday, as the megacity reported a record jump in cases and its worst smog in a year.
With fears growing about rising infections, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also banned firecrackers from being used this month throughout Diwali, the biggest festival on the Hindu calendar.
The air quality index– measuring the tiny particles which get in the bloodstream and crucial organs– was at its most harmful given that last November, according to the state-run System of Air Quality Weather Condition Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).
The poisonous haze blanketing Delhi, which frequently turns the city of 20 million individuals into the world’s most-polluted, came as officials late Wednesday reported a brand-new daily-high of 6,842 infection infections in the capital.
And the unclean air is in fact driving more cases of Covid-19, Kejriwal informed an online rundown.
” The corona scenario is worsening since of contamination,” he said, echoing medical analysis which states existing health problems brought on by bad air quality might make individuals more vulnerable to the coronavirus.
Anumita Roy Chowdhury, of the Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment, told AFP: “Some global research studies have already demonstrated how the impact of the pandemic is greater in more polluted regions.”
And Santosh Harish, at the Delhi-based Center for Policy Research, stated: “Evidence from previous related infections and emerging research recommend that pollution exposure might increase seriousness of the infection, and the transmission of the infection.”
– More crop burning –
Kejriwal blamed the choking smoke on farming burning, saying local state federal governments were not assisting farmers to discover alternative ways to clear their fields.
” We will come together to commemorate Diwali without crackers. If we rupture crackers, we are impacting the lives of our family and our kids,” he added.
The cracker frenzy typically turns Delhi’s grey winter season skies into a putrid yellow.
Every winter season, Delhi is blanketed by haze from an accumulation of vehicle fumes, industrial emissions and smoke from agricultural fires in regions around the capital.
The contamination is intensified by cooler temperature levels and slow-moving winds that trap contaminants over the city.
SAFAR said Thursday that crop stubble burning in states near the capital was the highest this season with some 4,135 fires.
India is the world’s 2nd most-infected country after the United States with more than 8.3 million Covid-19 cases.
Healthcare systems, currently extended by the pandemic, could be further stressed out by more hospitalisations from pollution-related diseases, researchers state.
