The real nightmare before Christmas would be not taking Covid seriously and loved ones passing away

SITTING in the local pizzeria a few weeks ago in Inchicore– or perhaps it was a couple of months earlier, I can’t really remember at this phase– my sibling and nieces informed me about a night out at the 3Arena last year.

t was The Headache Prior To Christmas Live Performance, with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and Catherine O’Hara, Danny Elfman and Ken Page there in person, voicing their characters.

It was by all accounts an extraordinary night, with kids and grownups in the arena going crazy when the stars strolled on stage. The uber-fans sang along, spoke along and cheered together with every scene.

This year, festivities in Ireland will have a very different feel.

In three-and-a-bit weeks, kids up and down the country and many grownups too would normally be getting fit and booted for their annual dressing-up.

Moms and dads would be zipping up skeleton outfits, putting pretend blood on child zombies and attaching fangs to mini Draculas.

Households would be legging it to the shops to get bags of sugary foods and filling up bowls in the house for the scary visitors. With darkness coming down, little figures would be winding their method through the streets, prepared to knock on doors and offer a trick or treat.

Festive celebrations over the next number of months will be alien. Occasions that stress our year have currently been downsized, distilled or cancelled.

I’m not a communion or verification fan, but seeing moms and dads trying desperately to make their kid’s big day something of an occasion has been bittersweet.

One child’s Holy Communion celebrations, which I saw pictures of on Facebook, had a cake the size of the cross in the Phoenix Park. There was some amount of compensation going on there.

A good friend’s kid had his 18 th birthday party with four member of the family and a Chinese takeaway.

Of course, the celebration of festivities, the Big C, the Yuletide extravaganza in just over two months’ time, will more than most likely be the biggest, dampest squib we have actually ever experienced.

With worries of Level 5 restrictions being dangled over us for the foreseeable future, like a Halloween apple on a string, we’ll simply have to accept there will be months of no parties, no gatherings, no trips away, no home meet-ups and no big household get-together suppers.

If we know this is the case, we can get our heads around it. The vaccine will follow year, those who are vulnerable will get it initially and after that everyone else will be cared for.

The genuine headache prior to Christmas would be not taking this pandemic seriously and loved ones ending up being ill or passing away as a result.

Festivities can wait, gatherings can occur once again. A great Christmas present will be the knowledge that everyone we understand is healthy, which need to be our primary focus.
