Stephen Kenny: Connolly and Idah Covid legend should not have occurred

Stephen Kenny would prefer if everybody carried on and concentrated on tomorrow’s Nations League encounter with Wales in Dublin but that wasn’t possible, or even likely, today when the Republic of Ireland employer was undoubtedly asked about events in Bratislava.

And on the way over.

Ireland’s hopes of winning the Euro 2020 playoff semi-final against Slovakia were impeded by the lacks of both Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah due to their close contact on the flight over with a non-football member of the celebration who subsequently tested favorable for Covid-19

” It’s not something that should have developed and we’re dissatisfied with it,” said the manager.

Kenny confirmed that Connolly had actually been booked to begin the playoff but neither he nor Idah will play any part in the two video games to come as a result of Covid procedures. The remainder of the Ireland squad went through additional tests the other day and are due the outcomes tonight.

Not perfect, to state the least.

To find out on match day, and after that a little a legend since the possibility existed of an appeal etc … So it wasn’t good preparation on match day because we were having conversations about it and the impact of it rather than the match itself, however there is nothing we can do about it.”

Ireland will take a trip to Finland early next week for the 3rd game of this international window, and Kenny was asked if there were elements to the travel arrangements last week which might have been managed differently.

The Sheffield United striker was superb at times against the Slovaks and his lack is another blow in a game that holds a significant importance for Ireland in terms of rankings and seedings ahead of the World Cup qualifier draw next month.

” We have a lot to think about,” said Kenny as he goes after a first win at the 4th attempt.
