First Minister Mark Drakeford has revealed that both his wife and mother caught coronavirus earlier in the year.

He had previously said that his wife was shielding and therefore he was sleeping in accommodation separate to his house at the bottom of his garden.

Because of the amount of people he meets daily, the First Minister feared would be at risk of getting the virus and then spreading it to his more vulnerable loved ones.

Mr Drakeford has now confirmed that his wife and mother did catch the virus and were “quite unwell”.

Speaking to Laura Kuenssberg on BBC Newscast “, Mr Drakeford said: “On a purely personal level both my wife and my mother fell ill with coronavirus at a point where I was not able to live at home because they were both vulnerable.

“There were some difficult days where they were both quite unwell.”

When previously asked whether he had been worried about contracting the virus and passing it on, Mr Drakeford said: “Well, you’re bound to worry aren’t you, because the reason people are shielding is because they’ve got vulnerabilities in their health and of course you’re bound to feel anxious for them which is why we made the decision early on to try and reduce the risk in the way that we have.

“It’s curious because if you’ve lived with people for a long time then not being in the same house is bound to be a bit odd but we’ve managed and we’re very lucky to be able to do it in the way we do.
