Dublin coronavirus limitations will only now be starting to have an effect

Dublin hasn’t yet seen a substantial enhancement in coronavirus numbers, according to Dr Ronan Glynn.

The Performing Chief Medical Officer says we’ll just start to see the impact of limitations in the coming days, and that the county isn’t yet in a location where a return to level two can be thought about.

Dublin has now been under level three restrictions for almost 2 weeks, with the measures to be in place for a minimum of another 10 days.

Donegal – which is also under level three constraints – has actually overtaken the worst regions of Dublin, with 204.2 cases per 100,000 over the past 14 days.

Nevertheless, the occurrence rate in the capital has continued to increase slowly over the past 7 days.

Speaking at the Oireachtas COVID-19 Committee today, Dr Glynn said it’s prematurely to telephone on easing the existing constraints.

He stated: “I completely appreciate the need for certainty – however what I would say is the steps that remained in place last Friday week for Dublin will only be starting to work the other day, today, tomorrow.

” We do need to see a significant improvement over the coming days in Dublin – we have not seen it yet.

” NPHET could sit today and make a suggestion for Dublin on Sunday week – but it would be an early recommendation, and a most likely inaccurate recommendation.”

He alerted that moving too early might have considerable repercussions, which concerns around the timing of the lifting of restrictions are ultimately a choice for Government.

Dr Glynn stated the next couple of days are crucial for Dublin – however the next couple of days after that might likewise be crucial if there’s no stabilisation.
