LONDON: Britain’s travel industry called on the government for an airport screening regime and more customized support as it released figures showing how the pandemic has sapped need for the overseas trips that are its lifeblood.

ABTA, the UK industry body representing 4,300 travel brands, said that between February and July 2020, that included the nation’s three-month lockdown duration, just 15 percent of 2,000 Britons surveyed took a foreign vacation compared to 64 percent the previous year.

That has struck airlines and travel companies hard, with 10s of thousands of task losses already made in the sector, and more expected when the government’s furlough scheme pertains to an end later on this month.

According to the data, 93 percent of customers stated they were stressed over last minute modifications to Britain’s quarantine guidelines, with ABTA blaming the federal government’s technique for intensifying people’s reticence to take a trip.

” It is important that the Global Travel Taskforce released this month to consider a testing program, and other procedures to support recovery of the travel market, acts decisively and urgently to assist increase consumer confidence and get the industry moving again,” ABTA said in a declaration on Wednesday.

Britain established the taskforce earlier in October to look at ways of minimizing the 14- day quarantine duration, which has eliminated need and left travel companies, airlines and airports struggling economically.
