India’s death toll from the novel coronavirus increased past 100,000 on Saturday, just the third nation in the world to reach that bleak milestone, after the United States and Brazil, and its epidemic shows no sign of easing off.
Overall deaths increased to 100,842, the health ministry stated, while the tally of infections reached 6.47 million after a day-to-day increase in cases of 79,476 India now has the highest rate of daily boost in infections in the world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s federal government, confronted with a collapsing economy after enforcing a hard lockdown to attempt to stem the spread of the virus in late March, is pushing ahead with a complete opening of the country.
