For weeks, instructors had encountered administrators and had even discussed a strike, but the in-person education strategy went ahead in a small public school district in Orange County, an area that historically leans conservative. Los Alamitos Unified School District likewise happens to be the only public school district in the 34- city county to get a waiver allowing it to progress with in-person education regardless of the county’s COVID case rate.

It’s part of an across the country sense of confusion and concern, as school systems bring students back in a patchwork of in-person and online direction that differs extensively from state to state, county to county, and even district to district.

Los Alamitos High School, among the first public schools in California to resume, had a comparable experience. One week after opening its doors, school authorities announced their very first COVID-positive case to personnel.

” Per interviews with this trainee relating to current interactions with all of you, the danger of establishing coronavirus infection from this exposure is considered low for everybody,” the letter read.

Because letter, Los Alamitos primary Gregg Stone asked faculty to keep an eye on symptoms, but said they did “not require to quarantine or do anything differently.”

The coronavirus case has the Los Alamitos community grappling with how to move forward.

A Los Alamitos High trainee told VICE News the COVID case was “kind of worrying to me.” In general, they are comfy with what the district has actually done so far, however are waiting to see what actions are going to be taken to prevent future infections. The district wasn’t the student’s main worry. The real issue was their classmates in fact taking COVID safety measures seriously.

At the middle and high schools, students are responsible for cleaning their desks in between each class. Throughout the very first week the trainee kept in mind, their schoolmates seemed wearing masks frequently on campus and cleaning in classes, but there were some traffic flow concerns that make passing durations more congested– and social distancing really challenging.

Which’s just at school. As soon as the final bell called on the first day back at Los Al High, trainees put off school. Many strolled to the shopping center across the street to socialize with each other. Lots had eliminated their masks.

According to Los Alamitos Unified’s school resuming safety strategy, trainees and personnel are offered PPE, undergo health screenings prior to class and in accordance with California Department of Public Health assistance personnel will be checked every two months. Because the positive COVID case, the district likewise produced an online tracker for households.

In anonymous interviews with VICE News, instructors and parents mentioned comparable interest in the district’s COVID policy: Social distancing, contact tracing and a sick kid’s go back to school. The district’s standards only require instructors to be 6 feet far from trainees. There are no requirements that trainees be 6 feet apart from one another.

Finally, students are sent home if they have a fever above 100.3 degrees fahrenheit, but they are permitted to return to campus 24 hours later if it has subsided.

Now that the district is reporting cases, concern is increased.

” Choosing LosAl@Home [the district’s distance learning program] was a difficult choice for me as a parent due to the fact that my kids were going to lose out on their social advancement,” Los Alamitos Unified parent Elissa Fredrick stated. “But it was the most safe decision for them, being what the security requirements and guidelines of this district are. I didn’t truly have a choice in my eyes.”

On the first day of school at Los Alamitos High, district superintendent Dr. Andrew Pulver stated the district was taking the preventative measures required to make the return to school a success.

” We’ve met every requirement for our instructors,” he said, “we do not want to put any of our students in an unsafe manner.”

Some instructors, on the other hand, do not believe enough has actually been done. One confidential teacher acknowledged that regional legal minimums were being fulfilled, but firmly insisted that “it’s inadequate to support genuine knowing and genuine security for students.”

” In our staff meetings, we’ve discussed the reality of an instructor or a student getting ill,” the instructor said. “It seems like the only thing that will get across the district that they didn’t do enough.”

Three school days after that interview, the high school reported its very first positive case to personnel. Two days later, Los Al reported their 2nd case.
