He said: “My heart pities all these trainees – I definitely remember my Leaving Cert event night. This is obviously going to be a Leaving Cert celebration like no other – it’s going to be extremely hard.

” The issue we have at the minute is we have a substantial amount of clusters, and it’s all related to house parties. This is possibly what might be occurring the length and breadth of the country – house parties tonight.

” What I would plead with trainees to do … you can meet, but if you could stick to the standards that would be extraordinary. That suggests six people inside from three various homes.”

The GP said the most important thing for students is to keep people like their parents and grandparents safe by adhering to the standards.

He said: “[Students] might have the ability to celebrate in perhaps a couple of months’ time or a year’s time … now is not the time to congregate.

” We are seeing a boost in the number of COVID-19 cases, particularly in Dublin: what we do not want is to see a big rise in two weeks, which will be attributed and regrettably blamed on Leaving Cert students.”

Face shields

Dr Ó Tuathail addressed a variety of other issues associating with schools and COVID-19 on the school today, including the subject of face shields.

The guards are in usage in schools across the country, with numerous teachers using them in class while interacting with their trainees.

Dr Ó Tuathail discussed: “We have actually a big amount of proof for face masks – the evidence is really, very strong. When it pertains to face guards, the proof is much weaker.

” They’re better than using absolutely nothing, but they’re nowhere near as protective as using face masks.”

Nevertheless, he kept in mind there are circumstances in schools in specific when shields require to be used by teachers – when a kid needs to lip read, for example, or when it’s tough to hear if somebody is wearing a mask.

He described: “What we’re seeing in classrooms is that every kid is using a face covering or face mask, and the teacher is using a face guard – that’s most likely appropriate, as the large, large bulk of individuals are using a face mask.

” But face guards do not [offer] the exact same level of protection as face masks – nowhere near it, to be sincere.”
