Schools are opening, and inevitably a minimum of a few of them will close again as COVID-19 outbreaks are found amongst students and personnel. There’s no federal system to track school break outs, however the < a data-ga ="[["Embedded Url","External link","https://app.smartsheet.com/b/publish?EQBCT=00a2d3fbe4184e75b06f392fc66dca13",{"metric25":1}]] href =" https://app.smartsheet.com/b/publish?EQBCT=00a2d3fbe 4184 e75 b06 f392 fc66 dca13" rel =" noopener noreferrer" target= "_ blank" > National Education Association has actually been assembling news stories and listing them by school district.

The effort was begun by a Kansas instructor, Alisha Morris, and the NEA took control of to try to keep this as a large, verified national database. But it still relies on teachers and other volunteers to report COVID cases as well as safety issues at grade schools throughout the U.S.

Cases and outbreaks are validated by inspecting media reports. There’s a link on the tracker for sending case reports and another for health and safety issues. Concerns are dealt with as personal, and you can submit them anonymously. Morris suggests that where details is lacking, people submit an idea to regional news media who may be able to examine further.

Click on the state reports and you can see break outs listed by school district, with links to media reports with more information. It’s not a full-featured tracker, and its organizers highlight that it’s incomplete, but it represents an extraordinary amount of work and can be beneficial if you’re attempting to determine whether your school has had an outbreak.

It’s a shame that we do not have a national, organized, well-funded effort to track school cases accurately; as the federal response to COVID-19 has actually been indifferent, states are rushing to do what they can– and what they have the political support for– which is often not quite. We applaud the NEA and their volunteers for picking up the slack and doing the next best thing. < a data-ga ="[["Embedded Url","External link","https://app.smartsheet.com/b/publish?EQBCT=00a2d3fbe4184e75b06f392fc66dca13",{"metric25":1}]] href="https://app.smartsheet.com/b/publish?EQBCT= 00 a2d3fbe4184 e75 b 06 f392fc66 dca13" rel="noopener noreferrer" target =" _ blank" > Search for reports for your state here
