One of the new research studies revealed that more than 10 percent of healthy individuals who ended up with extreme COVID-19 symptoms have antibodies that attack the patient’s own IFNs and stop them correctly battling the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
While this potential mechanisms would just explain a proportion of COVID-19’s most severe cases, it just may be a discovery that could still save 10s, if not hundreds of thousands of lives.
Comparing the genes of 659 patients with lethal cases of COVID-19 with 534 individuals with asymptomatic or benign infections resulted in the recognition of 13 problems in series known to be integral to IFN’s anti-influenza activity.
