After hearing that lots of customers had actually developed COVID-19 after going to a karaoke night in Quebec City last month, Stéphane Goulet took actions to ensure his clients are safe when vocalizing tunes at his bar in Sherbrooke.

Goulet installed a six-foot high transparent cubicle at Resto-Bar Le Figaro today and consumers have been recommending songs by text message rather of writing demands down on paper.

To adhere to health and wellness guidelines, he had already purchased a UV sanitizer package to disinfect 10 to 15 microphones. The microphones are handed to customers by an employee using gloves and are cleaned for about 10 minutes after each usage.

” You have a much better chance of getting COVID-19 in your kitchen than by singing karaoke here,” he stated in an interview.

So Goulet was dissatisfied Monday when he found that Sherbrooke police had told the media that customers were flouting health and wellness guidelines at Le Figaro and the Bar du Chat Noir, another establishment he owns.

Police officers showed up at Le Figaro about 2 a.m. on Saturday early morning and saw a number of clients huddled outside, not appreciating the two-metre rule.

” It had nothing to do with karaoke,” he stated.

On Sunday night, police went to the Bar du Chat Noir and reported that clients were dancing closely together, stated Martin Carrier, a representative for the Sherbrooke authorities. Reports of the incidents will be forwarded to a district attorney, he stated.

Although the Chat Noir’s capability is 308, Goulet stated he only permits about 123 people inside to make sure individuals are safe. Clients are not permitted to dance and should have a mask on when walking around.

Goulet acknowledged that a couple of clients were dancing close to their appointed tables on Sunday.

” When people enter into my bar, I caution them twice, 3 times, otherwise I ask to leave,” he said. “But I can’t connect individuals to their chair. If people are following the rules 98 per cent of the time, are you going to punish me for the other 2 per cent?”

The Quebec federal government has urged people to be extra watchful throughout karaoke evenings since singing and sharing microphones can facilitate the transmission of COVID-19

Goulet said he presumes he was targeted by the authorities due to the fact that he provided numerous media interviews last week talking about safety protocols in karaoke bars.

” We’re attempting to endure with what we have and I think we’re doing the best we can,” he stated. “There’s no solution that’s 100 per cent effective.”
