Hundreds of protestors wearing raincoats, but not facemasks gathered on Parliament Hill on Saturday to demand an end to government-imposed rules designed to limit the spread of COVID-19.
The protest was organized by a group called “The Line.” It bills itself as a “leaderless movement” formed to defend constitutional rights and freedoms.
It wants an end to the COVID-19 lockdown and opposes government rules to control the pandemic, such as regulations that require the wearing of facemasks in stores.
The Line has 16,000 followers on Facebook. The group obtained a permit for its all-day protest, and Ottawa police reported no arrests.
The group appears to be an offshoot of an American group with a similar name, The Line U.S.A. Its members vow to defend “their rights and civil liberties at any cost.”
“We the people, draw the line to end corruption and control,”its website asserts.
According to the federal government, 9,108 Canadians had died from COVID-19 during the pandemic, as of Friday.
