Mass General study reveals physical distancing slowed development of COVID-19 in US

BOSTON – Between March 10 and March 25, 2020, all 50 states and the District of Columbia enacted at least one statewide physical distancing measure to assist stop the spread of COVID-19 New research from clinicians at Massachusetts General Medical Facility (MGH) show these government-issued physical distancing orders significantly slowed the COVID-19 epidemic, leading to an approximated reduction of more than 600,000 cases within three weeks of application.

” Lots of have highly presumed that physical distancing policies assisted disrupt COVID-19 transmission throughout the early days of the U.S. epidemic,” said Mark J. Siedner, MD, MPH, a contagious diseases doctor at MGH and Associate Professor of Medication at Harvard Medical School, who co-authored the research study.

The MGH scientists – in partnership with associates at University College London, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania – examined data from the first five months of the COVID-19 epidemic in the U.S. They collected data on government-issued orders on statewide physical distancing procedures and compared changes in COVID-19 cases and COVID-19- attributed deaths in states that carried out physical distancing measures before and after execution.

The results show the typical day-to-day COVID-19 case development rate began declining roughly one incubation duration (i.e. 4 days) after implementation of the first statewide physical distancing measures. What is unique to this new research study is scientists discovered that the typical everyday COVID-19- associated death rate also began decreasing after the implementation of physical distancing steps, which prior to this research study had not been analyzed.

The study looked at a large selection of procedures, consisting of school and service closures, restrictions on public gathering, and shelter-in-place orders. Because the various types of physical distancing procedures were normally carried out in close temporal proximity to each other, the research group was not able to determine particularly which types of physical distancing procedures were most effective.

The findings of the design recommend that statewide physical distancing measures minimized the total number of reported COVID-19 cases by around 1,600 cases by one week after application and – due to the rapid growth of the spread – by around 621,000 cases by three weeks after implementation.

One of the most significant constraints of the research study is that the application of statewide physical distancing steps was not a controlled experiment. If state federal governments heightened physical distancing procedures in reaction to intensifying regional upsurges, the analysis would likely have revealed that the policies were less efficient.

” The findings show that physical distancing procedures slowed the growth of the COVID-19 epidemic and saved lives, and also purchased our health care leaders some time to strengthen their rise capacity to deal with the epidemic,” said senior author Alexander C. Tsai, MD, psychiatrist at MGH and Partner Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Added Siedner: “This is a case where previous success does not predict future control. COVID-19 case development seems trending up in lots of states around the nation, consisting of Massachusetts. If containment and more conservative procedures fail, we need to be prepared to slow or reverse reopening efforts. Till a vaccine is provided and extensively deployed in a fair style, we have few other alternatives. Thankfully, our data show that these procedures work– if we have the wherewithal to use them.”

About the Massachusetts General Health Center

Massachusetts General Medical facility, founded in 1811, is the initial and biggest teaching healthcare facility of Harvard Medical School. The MGH Research Institute carries out the largest hospital-based research program in the nation, with an annual research study budget of more than $1 billion and comprises more than 8,500 researchers working throughout more than 30 institutes, centers and departments. In August 2020 the MGH was called # 6 in the country by U.S. News & World Report in its list of “America’s Finest Healthcare facilities.”.
