World 3000 m steeplechase champion and Olympic gold medallist Conseslus Kipruto will not be completing in next week’s season-opening Diamond League in Monaco after checking favorable for coronavirus.

The 25- year-old was amongst 11 elite Kenyan athletes granted visas to complete in the 14 August race but was forced to bail out after going through compulsory screening for the illness.

Kipruto, the existing Olympic and world champion, was tested on Friday at a hospital in Eldoret.

” It is unfortunate that the test came back favorable, and therefore I can’t become part of the team,” he said.

” It’s extremely frustrating that having trained so hard through this pandemic-induced duration, I might not be able to compete this year. My health is more important.”

Kipruto said he had no signs and was awaiting more recommendations from his doctors.

The ladies’s 3000 m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, world 1500 m champ Timothy Cheruiyot and Hellen Obiri, the two-time females’s 5000 m champion, are amongst the Kenyan team travelling to the principality for the competition.
