TOPEKA, Kan. (AP)– Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly tested negative for the coronavirus Friday as a Republican legislative leader faced criticism from some Democrats for not telling coworkers until today that he ‘d been contaminated and hospitalized before he, Kelly and other leading lawmakers had a public conference last month.

Fellow Republican leaders protected House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr., stating he took more than sufficient preventative measures to prevent spreading out the infection after discovering he may have it July 10 and had been cleared by a doctor prior to going to a conference with Kelly on July 29 at the Statehouse. They likewise accused the Democratic governor of politicizing his case.

Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, a Topeka Democrat, stated also he would get evaluated, including that your home speaker “can’t be trusted.” Kelly has called Ryckman’s presence at the July 29 conference “reckless and dangerous.” Ryckman informed fellow Home Republicans of his favorable test in a Thursday e-mail.

” Individuals just need to be careful,” stated Sen. Carolyn McGinn, a Wichita-area Republican who participated in the July 29 conference by phone. “I decided early to use a mask and made that choice due to the fact that I wanted to secure the people around me.”

Ryckman is the highest-ranking Kansas official understood to have been contaminated. Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt of neighboring Oklahoma tested positive last month.

Kelly stated in a statement Thursday that Ryckman took his mask off throughout the meeting.

Hensley is up until now the only legislative leader who was at the conference who plans to get evaluated, though he stated he’s had no signs. The other six who participated in stated they doubted that Ryckman exposed them.

” Why is she making a huge offer of this?” Home Bulk Leader Dan Hawkins, a Wichita Republican, said of Kelly. “Politics.”

Kelly and Republican lawmakers have been at odds for months over how finest to slow the infection’ spread, with the GOP effectively pressing to have local authorities make decisions, well prior to verified and possible cases statewide rose by 81%over the past month.

Some Republicans argue Kelly’s administration is painting an excessively gloomy picture.

Senate President Susan Wagle, another Wichita Republican politician, noted that the portion of reported cases resulting in deaths is at its lowest point since the very first fatality was reported in March. It was at 1.24%as of Friday. Majority the reported deaths have actually been related to assisted living home.

” The theatrical red drape is now large open on Governor Kelly’s political effort to spread worry and stress and anxiety rather than stories of hope and recovery,” Wagle stated in a declaration texted to The AP.

Ryckman said he learned July 10 that he ‘d had contact with someone who may have the infection. He tested positive July 13 and was later on hospitalized for about a week. He stated he told everybody with whom he ‘d been in contact.

Ryckman did not immediately react to Hensley’s remarks, however Hawkins rejected the idea that Ryckman could have spread out the infection then.
