DETROIT: General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co said on Tuesday (Aug 25) they are close to finishing production of ventilators ordered by the Trump Administration this spring in action to the surge in coronavirus cases, and are ramping down or exiting the operations.

A number of the ventilators put together by the car manufacturers and other manufacturers have gone into a United States government stockpile as doctors moved away from utilizing invasive ventilators with COVID-19 patients.

GM and medical equipment maker Ventec Life Systems are in the “house stretch” toward completing a contract to provide 30,000 important care ventilators by the end of August under a US$489 million contract with the federal government, the automaker stated.

GM and Ventec have currently provided more than 20,000 devices, GM representative Jim Cain said.

Ford has put together about 47,000 of the 50,000 ventilators it agreed to supply to partner General Electric Co, Ford spokeswoman Rachel McCleery stated.

Ford and GM earlier this year stated they would employ a total of as numerous as 1,500 individuals on ventilator assembly lines.

With North American cars and truck and truck factories back in operation, the Detroit car manufacturers are winding down their ventures into ventilator manufacturing, while continuing to make respiratory masks.

Ford has not said what the future will be for its ventilator center.
