( Reuters) – Catalent Inc said on Monday its Maryland facility would make the drug substance used in the COVID-19 vaccine being established by AstraZeneca Plc and the University of Oxford, beginning “late in the third quarter” this year.

The New Jersey-based business said the drug substance will be made at its industrial gene treatment production facility in Harmans.

Catalent would provide the so-called viral vector, which is a genetically modified safe infection created to deceive the body into producing certain parts of the coronavirus. These proteins, in turn, trigger the body immune system to establish an arsenal for any genuine COVID-19 infections.

There are no authorized vaccines for COVID-19, and AstraZeneca is among the business leading the race to develop a safe and effective alternative.

AstraZeneca has actually signed multiple production and supply deals globally, consisting of in the United States, Britain, South Korea and Brazil, leading to a target to make over 2 billion dosages of the experimental vaccine.

Catalent struck a deal with AstraZeneca in June to supply vial-filling and product packaging capability at its production center in Anagni, Italy and prepare for providing hundreds of millions of dosages of the vaccine from this month, and possibly through until March2022

The company stated it would prepare the Harmans facility to allow several production trains to run in parallel to produce the vaccine candidate drug compound “late in the 3rd quarter” of this year.
