A study from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Kid’s Hospital of Chicago discovered that children more youthful than 5 years with moderate to moderate COVID-19 have much greater levels of genetic product for the virus in the nose compared to older kids and grownups. The ability of younger kids to spread COVID-19 might have been under-recognized given the quick and sustained closure of schools and daycare during the pandemic.
” We found that kids under 5 with COVID-19 have a greater viral load than older kids and adults, which might suggest higher transmission, as we see with breathing syncytial virus, also known as RSV,” states lead author Taylor Heald-Sargent, MD, PhD, pediatric contagious diseases specialist at Lurie Kid’s and Assistant Teacher of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This has crucial public health ramifications, specifically throughout conversations on the safety of reopening schools and daycare.”
Dr. Heald-Sargent and associates analyzed 145 cases of moderate to moderate COVID-19 illness within the first week of sign start. They compared the viral load in three age groups – kids younger than 5 years, children 5-17 years and grownups 18-65 years.
” Our study was not designed to show that more youthful kids spread COVID-19 as much as adults, however it is a possibility,” states Dr. Heald-Sargent. “We need to take that into account in efforts to minimize transmission as we continue to learn more about this virus.”
