The Mayor of Luton and two other councillors were envisioned breaking lockdown rules at a celebration just days prior to Public Health England issued a cautioning about an increase of coronavirus cases in the town.

Pictures shared on Facebook showed Mayor Tahir Malik and councillors Waheed Akbar and Asif Masood at an outside gathering on Tuesday with 9 other males.

Existing Covid-19 guidance from the Federal government enables events of only up to six people.

Few of the males at the gathering are using face masks in the photos and in one image Mr Malik is seen with a mask hanging listed below his face.

It comes after Luton signed up with Blackburn, Darwen and Leicester at the top of Public Health England’s Covid-19 watchlist

According to the current information on the rolling seven-day rate of new cases in local authorities, the rate of infections in Luton has jumped from 23.4 to 37.4 cases per 100,000 individuals.

The images sparked outrage from citizens as more than a hundred people signed a petition requiring the Mayor to resign

Kieran Jones who introduced the petition composed: “This neglect for the rules from members of the council from individuals in positions of power who need to be leading by example shows a complete disrespect for the town and individuals that live here and sets a precedent that leads other to do the very same thing … this is the precise factor Covid levels are so high in our town.”

In a declaration to Luton Today the three Labour councillors apologised “unreservedly to the people of Luton” for their breach of the lockdown rules.

” We attended what our companied believe was going to be a small socially distanced event, in line with the Federal government standards,” they stated in the statement.

” We must have left right away, and it refers genuine remorse for each of us that we did not do so.

” It is all of our duty to follow the guidelines. We are sorry that we did not live up to the standards that are appropriately anticipated people.”

” We take all such problems incredibly seriously and an examination into their declared behaviour will be started and a decision arrived at.

” The council has recently re-issued its guidance concerning coronavirus and anticipates everyone to follow this in order to stop the spread of the infection and conserve lives.”

Labour’s Chief Whip is examining the lockdown breach. A spokesman from the eastern branch of the local Labour Celebration stated it was very important “for those in positions of authority to be setting the right example”.
