Health leaders consisting of the chief of the British Medical Association are calling on the Federal government to do more to prevent a second wave of coronavirus in the UK.
Professionals revealed “extremely high” levels of issue about the possibility of a second spike of Covid-19 cases at a conference of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on coronavirus.
Head of the British Medical Association (BMA) Dr Chaand Nagpaul told MPs: “At the minute we’re refraining from doing everything we need to in trying to consist of the infection.
” If I look even at something as easy as our messages on social distancing: we’re told that social distancing is still two metres, or one metre plus.
” Do you believe any member of the public understands what one metre plus indicates?
Dr Nagpaul criticised the Government’s “blended messaging” saying a more “robust method” was needed to enforce precaution.
Speaking more specifically about assistance on using face masks, Dr Nagpaul stated the Federal government had actually made an announcement however then left people with “free will whether to wear them”.
Coronavirus: Face coverings become necessary in stores
” You then follow that up with an extremely organized method to make sure that happens,” he said.
” What I imply by reducing is you take a mindset that says: we wish to do absolutely everything to make sure the infection does not spread. That needs a lot more robust method.
” The point is that I’m uncertain that sense of clear, single-minded determination to do everything we can is being done which’s what I indicate by suppressing.”
In its submission paper for the APPG, the BMA also stated that the Federal government’s preliminary response to the break out “was marked by a failure to properly prepare”.
The union said that the Government now needs to supply a comprehensive intend on how it will provide sufficient Personal Protective Devices(PPE) in the event of a second wave.
Meanwhile, Dr Nagpaul cautioned the NHS is entering its “busiest” season and is currently dealing with a “big stockpile of care”.
He stated the system requires to “exist together” by dealing with Covid-19 patients, as well as non-Covid-19 patients and those who suffer winter flu.
However he stated that a 2nd spike must not be seen as an “inevitability”.
He added: “We need to ensure that the present stockpile is handled due to the fact that the clients who have not been seen are patients who might have urgent problems– heart patients, breathing clients, neurological clients.
” We need to methodically ensure that those patients who are most in need, who haven’t received treatment, are treated now.”
Niall Dickson, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, warned of difficulties “tired staff” could deal with if the NHS dealt with tackling a spike of cases while trying to rebuild services.
He told the APPG: “I would say in relation to the second spike concern or something coming, the levels of concern among our members– individuals who are leading NHS trusts, who are leading in medical care and all levels in the systems– is really high.
” There’s genuine issue about winter and the intensifying elements there, but also about an earlier spike.”
Mr Dickson added non-Covid-19 performance in NHS trusts was currently at about 60 per cent.
He called for an “Amazon-style” method for the health and care system to buy PPE where they can order it and have it arrive the next day.
