Palantir, the information analytics business co-founded by Peter Thiel, is currently an active tech gamer in the scrum for federal contracts, but it’s playing a new and increasingly popular role in providing the federal government with software application tools to attend to the COVID-19 crisis.

This month, the Department of Veterans Affairs granted a brand-new $ 5 million contract to Palantir through veteran-owned software reseller i3 Federal LLC, which notes Palantir as a partner. The contract, set to run through November, will offer the VA with Palantir’s Gotham software application to “track and evaluate COVID-19 outbreak areas and make prompt decisions with insight into supply chain capability, healthcare facility stock, social service usage and lab diagnostics.”

Palantir’s Gotham tool, best understood for its use by law enforcement agencies, is one of the business’s primary products and collects diverse data streams onto one platform. Twitter user Jack Poulson initially found the contract, which was later on reported by FedScoop

A smaller contract also noted this month awards Palantir $2 million to provide the National Institutes of Health within the U.S. Department of Health and Person Provider (HHS) a” COVID-19 dataset aggregation evidence of concept.”

Palantir moved early to offer its services to federal governments grappling with the risk of the coronavirus and by mid-March was already working with the CDC to model infection patterns and expect health center devices requirements.

In April, HHS granted two contracts worth nearly $25 million to the company for a software application platform called HHS Protect Now, intended to inform public health choices made by the White Home’s Coronavirus Job Force. HHS didn’t get competition for those agreements, keeping in mind that the COVID-19 crisis developed a situation of “uncommon and engaging seriousness.”
