(CNN) The new coronavirus can persist in males’s semen even after they have begun to recover, a finding that raises the possibility the virus might be sexually transmitted, Chinese scientists stated Thursday.
A team at Shangqiu Municipal Healthcare facility tested 38 male clients dealt with there at the height of the pandemic in China, in January and February.
About 16%of them had proof of the coronavirus in their semen, the team reported in the journal JAMA Network Open. About a quarter of them were in the severe phase of infection and almost 9%of them were recuperating, the group reported.
” We discovered that SARS-CoV-2 can be present in the semen of patients with COVID-19, and SARS-CoV-2 may still be found in the semen of recovering clients,” Diangeng Li of Chinese Individuals’s Freedom Army General Medical Facility in Beijing and colleagues wrote.
” Even if the virus can not replicate in the male reproductive system, it may continue, possibly arising from the fortunate resistance of testes,” the team added. Privileged resistance indicates the immune system can not fully reach the region to attack viral intruders.
It’s not an unexpected finding. Numerous infections can reside in the male reproductive system. Ebola and Zika infection were both discovered to spread in semen, in some cases months after a male patient had recuperated.
It’s not yet clear if coronavirus can spread in this manner. Discovering proof of virus does not always indicate it’s infectious.
” If it might be proved that SARS-CoV-2 can be transferred sexually in future studies, sexual transmission may be a critical part of the prevention of transmission,” the group wrote.
” Abstinence or prophylactic use might be considered as preventive methods for these clients. In addition, it is worth keeping in mind that there is a requirement for studies keeping track of fetal development. For that reason, to prevent contact with the patient’s saliva and blood might not suffice, given that the survival of SARS-CoV-2 in a recovering client’s semen maintains the probability to contaminate others.”
