There are a number of efforts by startup companies and entrepreneurs wanting to support the health care reaction to COVID-19, and one that’s attending to a requirement in the realm of personal protective equipment is the COVID Box task released by a group of volunteers in Toronto that includes start-up creators and workers, as well as physicians and health care experts.
The COVID-19 intubation box that this group is working to produce is a polycarbonate box that can be flat-packed for easy shipping, and assembled quickly on the receiving end for use in health care facilities while medical workers intubate a patient. Intubation is the process of inserting a plastic tube into a patient’s trachea to assist keep their airway open, and is specifically essential when someone needs to be placed on a ventilator– a common outcome for clients severely impacted by COVID-19
The intubation box offers healthcare workers with an additional layer of protection, while the transparent plastic utilized ways they can still carry out the treatment. The design is based upon an open-sourced original plan that was released by Dr. Hsien Yung Lai, a doctor in Taiwan, specifically to address the global challenge of intubating COVID-19 clients worldwide while maintaining care worker safety as much as is possible.
The COVID Box job provides directions on how to make your own box with the requisite materials, however it is wanting to protect more mass production capability to deliver them at scale, beginning with Canadian health centers and ideally expanding to resolve health care requirements around the world, too. Job co-founder Jonathan Norris (co-founder and CTO of Taplytics) said the group has been working for a week on prototyping and production.
” Early last week Taplytics Head of Financing, Gloria Cheung, came to us letting us understand that a group of Medical professionals were looking to get a basic plastic box made to protect Medical Providers while intubating patients who have COVID-19,” he stated by means of message. “We were able to link the medical professionals with a group of engineers from Taplytics and folks I know from mentoring in the FIRST Robotics program, to design and develop numerous models of a flat-packable box designed for this usage.
The group is searching for donations to assist scale its efforts, along with making partners that can help— particularly those that have access to CNC router hardware, which is essentially the only equipment required to put these out, along with anyone who can supply 1/4 ″ polycarbonate sheets.
